The best selling number one music tracks of 1969 included Marmalades version of the beatles track Ob La Di Ob La Da. This was the first number one of the year and bounced back to pole position after 60s cheesy party classic Lily the Pink had a one week stop at the top. Marvin Gaye with I Heard It Through the Grapevine provide one of the years highlights as did the stones with Honky tonk women. The only Beatles track to be co credited was Get Back and Billy Preston was, for a while refered to as the fifth Beatle. The Bobby gentry track which was penned by Burt Bacharach reached number 6 stateside when sung by Dionne Warwick in 1970. 20 years later a re recording of I'll never fall in Love again by Deacon Blue got to number two in the uk charts. One time number one wonders the Archie's had their only hit but made the most of it by perhaps having the longest stay in the top slot. Rolf Harris claimed the last number one of 1969 and therefore the first of the 70s. He also sang on do they know its Christmas 2 in 1989 which was the last and first chart topper of the 80s and 90s. One singer had number ones in 4 decades with two music tracks. We mention this not by way of a congratulation but as a historical fact.
